Overzicht resultaten
Sinds 1999 zijn er negen metingen geweest binnen de Vlaamse studie. In deze metingen hebben de jongeren, ouders en leerkrachten vragenlijsten ingevuld. Op basis van deze enorme schat aan informatie, zijn er door de onderzoekers vele wetenschappelijke artikelen geschreven en in de media nieuwsberichten uitgekomen.

Schreeuwende ouders beschadigen kind
Ouders die schreeuwen tegen hun kind of het zwaar bekritiseren om het terecht te wijzen, lopen de kans dat hun kind meer gaat liegen, spijbelen en stelen dan andere kinderen. Het geschreeuw maakt vooral kinderen die introvert, onwelwillend of slordig zijn agressief, al speelt aanleg daarbij ook een rol.

Waarom zijn kinderen stout?
Een driftbui, liegen, nukkig reageren, ze doen het allemaal wel eens. Waarom zijn kinderen (soms) stout? En wanneer wordt stout zijn echt probleemgedrag? «Ouders moeten dringend hun kinderen opnieuw opvoeden», klinkt het op school. «Je kan ouders niet altijd met de vinger wijzen», zegt doctor Peter Prinzie. «Sommige kinderen hebben gewoon een moeilijker karakter. En dat los je niet altijd op met een strenge aanpak.»Dr. Peter Prinzie: «Goed opvoeden is niet genoeg».
Drie jaar lang volgde orthopedagoog Peter Prinzie 680 kinderen tussen 4 en 6 jaar tot ze 7 en 9 waren. Hij zocht naar het verband tussen probleemgedrag bij kinderen en hun opvoeding. Hoe stout zijn kinderen en waarom?

Jong geweld
U leest niet vaak cijfers over geweld bij jonge kinderen. Hier zijn ze. Eén op vijf Vlaamse moeders van jongens tussen 4 en 7 jaar meldt dat hun kind regelmatig spullen van andere kinderen vernielt. Meisjes zijn blijkbaar op vele punten een pak braver. Eén op vier jongens vecht veel, ongeveer één op drie heeft regelmatig een driftbui, liegt en bedriegt. Dat blijkt uit tussentijdse resultaten van het onderzoek «Opvoeding in Vlaanderen» aan de Universiteit van Leuven. Voor Klasse voor Ouders vergeleken de onderzoekers de cijfers ook met die van tien jaar geleden.
«Er is niet méér dan toen», zegt Peter Prinzie, pedagoog en coördinator van het onderzoek. «Ook al denken ouders en opvoeders dat misschien.» Toch zijn jonge kinderen soms al heel agressief. Dat zorgt voor problemen thuis en op school.
